"We are often met with intriguing questions and phenomena that capture the world's imagination. One such topic is the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects or UFOs. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, how might we approach this subject with faith, humility, and a thirst for understanding?" Steven W. Scott
The Wondrous Expansiveness of God's Creations
The scriptures are clear about the vastness of God's creations. In the Pearl of Great Price, Moses learned that God's creations are indeed without number: “And worlds without number have I created; and by the Son I created them…” (Moses 1:33). With such boundless universes, we are but a small part of His divine plan, leaving much yet to be discovered and understood.
Seeking Wisdom and Knowledge
The Lord has always encouraged His children to seek wisdom and knowledge. The Doctrine and Covenants reads, "Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith" (D&C 88:118). While we must approach topics like UFOs with caution, ensuring we rely on credible sources, we are nonetheless encouraged to seek understanding.
All Truths Shall Be Circumscribed into One Great Whole
The revelations we have received indicate that all truths, whether spiritual or secular, are part of one great tapestry. The Book of Mormon teaches, "All things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator" (Alma 30:44). If UFOs are proven real and their mysteries unraveled, those truths will seamlessly fit within the greater truths of the gospel.
Angels, Chariots, and Heavenly Visions
The scriptures are replete with descriptions of heavenly manifestations, visions, and divine messengers. Elisha's servant, for example, saw chariots of fire in the King James Bible: "And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha" (2 Kings 6:17). While not suggesting a direct correlation, it is worth noting that divine encounters and mysterious aerial phenomena have been a part of human experience for millennia.
Moving Forward with Humility
While it's natural to be curious about UFOs and the mysteries they present, we must also proceed with humility. Our quest for understanding should not overshadow the foundational truths of the gospel. We remember the words from the Book of Mormon: "And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God" (Alma 31:5). Let the gospel guide our pursuits, ensuring they enhance, not distract from, our eternal journey.
Conclusion
Brothers and sisters, as we navigate these intriguing questions about UFOs and other mysteries, let us anchor ourselves in the gospel's eternal truths. By doing so, we will find the balance between curiosity and faith, always moving closer to our Heavenly Father and His infinite wisdom. May we continue to seek understanding, fortified by our faith and the knowledge that all truths come from God.
